Resistance of the Workers Continues at UPS, PTT, and Nemtrans in Istanbul

UPS workers are getting close to victory at their 258th day of resistance while workers at PTT (The General Directorate of Posts Telephone and Telegraph Cooperation) and Nemtrans started picket lines to protest against subcontractor system and lack of job security.

The resistance of workers that lost their jobs after joining unions continues in many parts of Istanbul. UPS workers are getting close to victory at their 258th day of resistance while workers at PTT (The General Directorate of Posts Telephone and Telegraph Cooperation) and Nemtrans started picket lines to protest against subcontractor system and lack of job security.

The subcontractor system that leads to loss of jobs and limits job security has become very common in Turkey since the Justice and Development Party (AKP) came to power in 2002.  While workers joining unions in order to fight against the subcontractor system are losing their jobs, the resistance of the workers is spreading fast.

258TH DAY OF RESISTANCE AT UPS

118 workers that lost their jobs at UPS after joining the transportation union TÜMTİS are at the 158th day of their resistance. Fired UPS workers continue their struggle at the picket line in front of the UPS's Mahmutbey Transshipment center. Workers from more than 30 countries showed their solidarity with the UPS workers through petitions and demonstrations.  Union representatives stated that negotiations continue with the UPS managers.

RESISTANCE AT PTT CONTINUES AFTER 15 DAYS

The subcontractor company fired178 workers at the PTT on the grounds that the terms of their contract had changed.  The fired workers started a resistance tent in front of the main PTT authority in Istanbul. According to Riza Soylu, one of the fired workers, the loss of jobs at PTT is a consequence of the privatization policies. Soylu said that they would continue their struggle until they get back their jobs. Soyle also mentioned the role of similar struggles around the country such as the one at the Tuzla repair shipyard in their struggle by increasing their commitment to their goals.

RESISTANCE TENT IN THE MIDST OF BUSINESS TOWERS

After joining the transportation workers' union, Nakliyat İş , 45 workers were fired from transportation company Nemtrans, owned by the İş Bank. Fired workers first marched from Gemlik to Istanbul, and then set up resistance tent in front of the General Directorate of İş Bank. According to the president of Nakliyat İş, Ali Rıza Küçükosmanoğlu, İş Bank raised its profit by 50% in the last two years, but decided to move away from the transportation sector when workers started to join unions. Küçükosmanoğlu stated that the workers were determined and the resistance would continue till worker get their jobs back.
