Boycott at the schools for support of education in Kurdish

The campaign led by the TZP-Kurdi to boycott the schools in support of education of Kurds in their own language kicked off. Boycott was especially supported in Diyarbakır, Mardin, Şırnak, Hakkâri, Van, Ağrı, Muş, Iğdır, Bitlis, Kars and Urfa.

In Istanbul, the boycott initiated by TZP-Kurdi started with a demonstration at Galatasaray Square in which Kurdish students did a symbolic lecture in Kurdish. Demonstrators carried banners both in Kurdish and Turkish. Peace and Democracy Party member, MP Sebahat Tuncel also participated in the events in Istanbul. After the symbolic lecture, Ruşen Bana from TZP-Kurdi made a press release in Kurdish.

During her speech, Bana said that each language was a different identity, and reminded Prime Minister Erdogan's speech in Germany where he said " the denial of a language is the massacre of a nation". Bana said the case in Turkey was no different and continued: "For 88 years Kurdish language is banned in Turkey. Citizens who want to speak their own language face serious persecutions". Bana highlighted the pressures on Azadiya Welat , daily news source in Kurdish, and mentioned the struggle of the journalists working at Azadiya Welat .

Sebahat Tuncel also made a speech during the demonstration, and said ; " the assimilation policy against the Kurdish people continues for 80 years. We need to start a debate on the education system and its role in this assimilation".

Boycott has been strongly supported in provinces where citizens of Kurdish decent make the majority of the population such as Diyarbakır, Mardin, Şırnak, Hakkâri, Van, Ağrı, Muş, Iğdır, Bitlis, Kars, and Urfa, as well as many towns in Istanbul and Ankara. Boycott is expected to continue for a week.
